Te Whakarōpūtanga
Taxonomy
Three levels. Every item in the Love You, Bye set is placed in a Category, named as a Material, and routed to a Pathway. The Category carries the colour; the Material carries the icon; the Pathway says where it goes next.

The three levels
The same hierarchy runs through the icon set, the lookup, and every downstream surface.
01Rōpū
Category
Top-level material family. Fourteen of them. Each category carries a colour and a Māori label, and every material inherits both.
02Taonga
Material
A specific material or waste stream — 97 in total. Each material has its own icon, bilingual label, and canonical slug.
03Ara
Pathway
One of three routes: Kerbside, Drop-off, Special handling. The pathway is derived from the category and tells the person where the material goes next.
Pathways
Every category resolves to one of three pathways. Materials never carry their own pathway independently — the category is the source of truth.
39
Kerbside
materials routed this way
Collected at the kerb — the recycling, food scraps, garden, and general waste bins.
17
Drop-off
materials routed this way
Returned through a drop-off point — e-waste, deposit return, reuse, textiles, and transfer stations.
41
Special handling
materials routed this way
Needs a regulated or specialist pathway — hazardous, medical, and construction streams.
Categories
The full list of top-level categories and their default pathway. Example materials shown inline — the complete set lives in the icon specimen and the bilingual catalogue.
